Y-WE LEAD 2018-2019

Apply for Y-WE Lead Blue: Represent and Code
Apply for Y-WE Lead Green: Express and Changemakers

We lead with purpose, we lead with passion, we lead with compassion. To grow as leaders, we must understand ourselves as individuals and as a community. Y-WE Lead offers young women ages 13-18 the opportunity for self-discovery, building leadership skills, and creating intergenerational community with diverse youth and mentors.

This year, in order to have a more intimate group size, we will be offering two cohorts of Lead. Both will meet at Foster High School in Tukwila on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. Each day will begin with a shared meal and time to connect, then a full group activity that may include movement and/or discussion. In the afternoon, youth will split into their Learning Communities.

Lead Blue (Represent and Code)

This program will be led by Meera Bhardwaj, Nahil Sharkasi, and Samantha Pak. They will facilitate large group dialogues and activities as well as two Learning Communities. Youth will choose between Represent and Code.

Represent explores how women, particularly women of color, are represented in the media and seeks to provide youth with skills to represent themselves. In addition to discussions on representation, youth will learn tangible skills ranging from interviewing a source to designing and laying out a publication. In the past, participants learned how to podcast and make documentary films. Last year, Represent participants wrote articles and produced a Zine.

Code connects youth with science and technology in a fun and accessible way. Last year, they learned how to build apps. They even built an app that was used by participants at Y-WE Career Day. Every year participants have the opportunity to co-create the experience they wish to have, so this year’s focus will be shaped by you.

Lead Green (Changemakers and Express)

This program will be led by Tracy Stewart and Mari Shibuya. The overarching theme will be Artivism. The Learning Communities for this program are Express and Changemakers.

Express with is an exploration of creativity. You will be encouraged to view life as a creative activity and to use your own personal art as an avenue to impact the world around you. Participants will learn the basic tools of visual art and have the opportunity to create a mural.

Changemakers exposes participants to different kinds of activism highlighting what local folks and activists around the world are doing to make positive change. It will also challenge you to think about yourself as a change agent and determine what kind of action you would like to take in your own community.

Both programs begin with a Family orientation on October 27 and a weekend long retreat November 9-11. The year will conclude with a Youth Leadership Summit on May 25 and a Y-WE community celebration on June 1.
