August 25-29, 1-4PM Daily

Location: Private swimming pool in Des Moines (exact address to be provided to participants)

Hosted by Chandrika Francis of the Oshun Swim School, this is a five day exploration of Blackness and water. On the first day participants will be on land at the Y-WE office for an interactive workshop: We Come From Mermaids, African Diaspora & Water. This workshop is a deep dive into some of the rich and fascinating history of Black people and swimming. The next three days we’re going to get in the pool and improve our swimming skills (true beginners are very welcome!).  The final day we’ll gather for part two of the We Come From Mermaids workshop, where we explore some of the history of the African diaspora in the pool! We’ll wrap up with lots of time to play and splash with your new friends.
