Fatema is a Y-WE alum and now co-facilitator who is in her first year of college at the University of Washington. She shares how Y-WE helped her put her guard down and be herself.

This fall we are highlighting stories of growth and becoming that we are witnessing within our young alumni as part of our six-week campaign, Y-WE Become. Athena Fain has been a youth participant in Y-WE programs since 2017.

Today, for the second day in a row, Seattle has the worst air quality of any big city on the planet. Since July, we’ve had less than half an inch of rain. And politicians and news outlets have been relatively quiet about it – pretending that this type of weather is normal. But every year, the temperatures are rising, the rain is decreasing, and the impact of wildfires is growing exponentially.

The Y-WE community is rooted in the principals of creating a society where all of us have agency over our own bodies. We must now be there for each other as we navigate through the times ahead.

Today we are reminded that for every injustice there are sites of resistance – sites of harm reduction and support that arise in direct response to systemic gaps and intentionally harmful policies.
